Musharraf mulls counter-strategy, may move SC
* Musharraf says confrontation would harm democratic process
ISLAMABAD: President Pervez Musharraf may move the Supreme Court in order to counter efforts by the four-party coalition to impeach him, sources said on Friday.
A source close to the president’s top legal aide, Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada, told Daily Times that the veteran lawyer had had several meetings with Musharraf. A petition to challenge the impeachment move was also being drafted, the source said, adding that the petition could be filed with the SC at an “appropriate time”. The aides believe that charges being levelled against the president were not likely to lead to a successful impeachment motion, the source said. However, the charge sheet would be challenged before the court, he added.
According to Geo News, lawyers told the president that the SC had already validated Musharraf’s November 3, 2007 actions and other grounds stipulated by the Article 47 of the Constitution are not applicable in the present circumstances, it said.
Musharraf: Meanwhile, Musharraf said that a policy of confrontation would harm democratic process in the country, Express News reported. Officials said parliament could begin the impeachment process as early as Monday, which is also Musharraf’s 65th birthday, AFP reported. But a presidential aide said that Musharraf would “not wait for the numbers game” — meaning that he would not indulge in political horse-trading to stop the coalition getting the votes it needs. masood rehman/daily times monitor/afp
